VISION

sanc·tu·ar·y n. A place of refuge or safety; A nature preserve; A holy place

To further Spirit Canoe Lodge’s Vision to serve as a self-sustaining community that nurtures the human spirit and brings balance into the world for generations, we have started a Sanctuary Garden of Native Wildflowers and Forest Medicinals. We know that any sustainable land project deserves the necessary consideration of it’s at-risk plant populations and we honor them by:

  • Providing protected space for the native and medicinal plants to repopulate and naturalize

  • Cultivating At-Risk Medicinal plants for use instead of harming wild populations

  • Contributing to a sustainable and fair medicinal herb market in Appalachia

  • Growing a Community that puts connecting with nature and the earth in the forefront of all it does

  • Inspiring others by providing education opportunities

  • Nurturing a place of beauty and our connection to the natural world and all its living things

GOALS

turkscap2019.jpg

The project was started in the Fall of 2019 and we hope to see it grow and expand over the years becoming a legacy passed on through the generations. Our goal each year will be to add more forest medicinal plants and native wildflowers each year and develop trails through the property. Future projects also include adding a Native Wetland Garden at the pond and a Native Pollinator Garden complete with bees! Currently we have numerous native and medicinal plants including Yellow Lady Slipper, Trillium, Turk Cap Lily, Showy Orchis, Goldenseal, Echinacea, Blazing Star, White Baneberry/Doll’s Eyes, Blue Cohosh, Black Cohosh, Boneset, Stinging Nettle, Maidenhair Fern, and many many more. Trails are just beginning to be developed but already feature sit spots perfect for connecting with the plants and nature surrounding you.

We invite you to experience our garden sanctuary!

COMMUNITY

We are dedicated to our goals and work with a number of different non-profit groups that share our vision. We are registered as a member of United Plant Savers and are also a part of their Botanical Sanctuary Network. We are also in the process of applying as a Sacred Seeds Garden that protects not only native plants but the traditional knowledge surrounding them. We also have begun to work with Appalachian Sustainable Development Herb Hub.

SANCTUARY DIRECTOR

Susan Turman’s involvement with plants and the natural world is a journey that began over 20 years ago as an apprentice on a permaculture farm in Maui. Susan went on to become an organic farmer for 10 years, growing vegetables and producing pasture-raised meats for the high country community. She has most recently finished her degree in natural resource management specializing in wildlife and Silviculture. Susan has been involved with Spirit Canoe Lodge since 2016 and has danced as a SunDancer with the Deer Tribe. She loves connecting with nature from the trail, spending days or weeks at a time with nothing but a backpack. Her great interest is in habitat restoration and regenerative forestry of Oaks , native chestnuts, and longleaf pines. She lives in Todd, NC on her organic farm.
